MOTOR BUS SERVICE No. 2

THEATRE - FORE STREET - MILEHOUSE - PEVERELL - THEATRE

On Monday April 5th 1937 a major reorganisation and renumbering of all the tramway and motor bus services operated by the Plymouth City Transport Department.  It resulted in the tram service 2B, Theatre Royal, Devonport, Peverell, Theatre Royal, becoming route number 2.  [1]

Trams ran of that route for the last time on Sunday May 9th 1937 and double-deck motor buses took over the following day.  [2]

Thus, when the Plymouth Joint Services commenced on Thursday October 1st 1942 the route was:

Theatre Royal (Bank of England Place), Union Street, Edgcumbe Street, Cumberland Road, Chapel Street, Fore Street, Trafalgar Road, Stoke, Tavistock Road, Milehouse, Tavistock Road, Peverell Park Road, Hyde Park Road, Mutley Plain, Tavistock Road, Old Town Street, Basket Street, Westwell Street, Theatre Royal (Bank of England Place).  [3]

On weekdays there was a 10-minute frequency on this service in 1948 and the fares from the City Centre were: to Fore Street, 1½d; to Milehouse, 2½d; to Peverell, 3d; and all the way around to the City Centre, 4d.  On Sunday mornings the first bus from the City Centre departed at 9.07am and ran every 20-minutes until 1.47pm and every 10-minutes thereafter.  Four vehicles were employed on the route.  [4]
